Bow Valley High in Cochrane helps students and their families who are future students in the school. The charity drive is a little different from others as Bow Valley High School reaches out to its feeder schools which include: Glenbow, Mitford, Ranche View and Fireside looking for families that need a little extra help.
Outdoor Ed teacher at Bow Valley, Scott Thompson explains, “They are all future Bobcats, they are all kids that will eventually be attending Bow Valley High School. Once they know of some families that could use a leg up, they get to work to collect enough food and household supplies that will last for about 3 months. Plus, each family will also receive a Christmas hamper with all the fixings.
Thompson says he has worked on Helping Hampers numerous times and says, “Every year I am blown away by the generosity of individuals and businesses that work with us. We fill up a big car transport trailer and raise in the area of 2000 kilograms of food.” He goes on to add that if you know the stories of the families, “it really personalizes poverty. Plus, we know the kids will be attending Bow Valley High School in the future.”
Helping Hampers will provide 6 hampers to chosen families. Then they will make up some smaller hampers for individual students at Bow Valley and the remainder of the donations will go to the Activettes.
