Why Being Different Is Your Superpower By Jeff A.D. Martin

Yo, let’s get real for a second.

If you’ve ever walked into a room and felt like you didn’t belong because of the way you look, talk, dress, or where you come from this one’s for you.

As a black young man growing up, I learned real quick that people will sometimes treat you differently because of things you can’t control. Your skin. Your hair. Your name. And sometimes, people will make you feel like you have to change to fit in. But I’m here to tell you: you were never made to fit in you were made to stand out.

That’s what Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is about. Big words, I know. But let’s break it down: - Diversity is the fact that we’re all different different backgrounds, cultures, stories, and experiences. - Equity is making sure everyone gets what they need to succeed, not just treating everyone the same. - Inclusion means nobody gets left out of the conversation, the classroom, or the opportunity.

And guess what? DEI isn’t just for adults in the corporate world, sitting in boardrooms in boring meetings. It’s for you. It’s for that kid who doesn’t see anyone who looks like them in their textbooks. It’s for that teen who hears jokes that aren’t funny but doesn’t know how to speak up. It’s for that group of friends who want to do better and learn more.

When you embrace your differences and respect other people’s differences too you help build something powerful. You build a culture in your school where people feel seen, safe, and valued. And that matters. Because when people feel like they belong, they stop just surviving they start thriving. That’s important!

Let me say it straight: there’s power in your story. There’s strength in your voice. And just because you’re young doesn’t mean you can’t make change. Some of the biggest movements in the world started with young people who were tired of pretending everything was okay. So here’s my challenge to you:  Speak up when you see something wrong. Stand beside people who are being left out.  And most of all, be proud of who you are every part of you.

Being different isn’t a weakness. It’s a superpower…your superpower!

Walk in it. Own it. Share it. The world needs what you bring!
