Saying “Everyone is welcome” is easy. Making everyone feel welcome takes intention and empathy.
Start with Awareness
Recognize that not all students experience school the same way. Ask:
Who isn’t here?
Why might they feel excluded?
How can we change that?
Plan Inclusive Events
Involve diverse students early in planning
Ensure physical and sensory accessibility
Offer allergy-friendly and culturally respectful food options
Use inclusive language in announcements
Respect and celebrate different cultural traditions
Representation Matters
Seeing yourself reflected sends the message: “You belong here.” Promote diverse leaders, celebrate heritage meaningfully, and create space for all voices.
Keep Learning
You won’t get it perfect every time, that’s okay. Stay open, listen, and adjust with empathy.
Final Thought
Inclusivity isn’t one event, it’s leading with everyone in mind, every time.
Ask yourself: Who’s missing? How can I make this welcoming? Because every student deserves to feel they matter and you have the power to make that happen.
