Appreciating the Invisible Helpers: Building a Legacy Together

ree

In every school, there are people who quietly make everything run smoothly the ones who don’t always stand on stage or get the loudest applause. They’re the invisible helpers: the custodians who keep the halls shining, the office staff who know every name, the cafeteria team who fuel your day, and the volunteers who show up rain or shine to make sure every event feels special.

These individuals may not seek recognition, but their impact is lasting. They build the foundation of kindness, care, and community that defines your school’s spirit. When students and advisors take the time to thank them with a simple note, a smile, or a public shoutout it sends a powerful message: that leadership isn’t just about being in charge, it’s about noticing and appreciating others. Here are some ways to show your invisible helpers the appreciation they deserve.

Say Thank You, and Mean It

A genuine “thank you” in person goes a long way. Look custodians, secretaries, cafeteria staff, and volunteers in the eye and acknowledge what they do.

Write Notes of Appreciation

Have leadership students or classes create handwritten thank-you cards or posters recognizing each person by name. Display them publicly or deliver them personally.

Use Your Platform

Include shoutouts in announcements, newsletters, or social media posts. Let the school community know who keeps everything running.

Offer Acts of Kindness

Surprise them with coffee, snacks, or small tokens of appreciation. Even a group of students offering to help for a day makes an impact.

Learn Their Stories

Take time to ask about their roles, experiences, and what they love about the school it shows genuine respect and builds connection.

Legacy isn’t built by one moment or one person. It’s built by every act of gratitude, every moment of teamwork, and every person who chooses to make their school a little better each day. Appreciating your invisible helpers reminds everyone that true leadership is rooted in humility, empathy, and community and that is the kind of legacy that lasts.
